Trip to Lakselv River, Norway
The closest you can get to the Alta River; geographically and in fishing terms.
The river
Lakselv River, basically on the same latitude as the famous Alta River, has been known as a BIG salmon river for generations, but only recently has it become recognised on the same level as other highly respected salmon rivers in Arctic Norway.
Located between 70N and 71N, the river valley could easily have been a part of the Arctic tundra, however, thanks to the Gulf Stream it is amazingly fertile.
The area is renowned for its diverse vegetation and rich animal and bird life. Scenically, it ranges from the wilderness of the inland mountain plateau (Finnmarksvidda) to the dramatic Porsanger fjord.
This fjord stretches 125km (80 miles) north towards the Arctic Ocean to the huge cliffs of the North Cape plateau.

The fishing
Lakselv Fishing offers fishing on a number of selected public beats totalling to around 20km (12 miles) where there are limited number of rods. There is a combination of single and double bank fishing. Wading is easy in most parts of the river, as most riverbanks are gravel and with good space for any casting techniques. On the upper reaches of the river casting can become more challenging, due to the density of the vegetation.
Lakselv is regarded as a late river, as the main runs of salmon start around mid July and the best fishing is often in early August.
A special feature of Lakselv is the annual August run of big sea trout, often weighing between 6-8kg (13-18lbs) up to the heaviest registered weight of 12kg (26lbs). In addition to salmon, the river has very good stocks of arctic char, brown trout, grayling and sea trout. The largest arctic char caught is recorded at 2.6kg (5.7lbs).
The accommodation
The PIAS Motel is situated in the centre of the Lakselv village and anglers should have access to a car to get to the fishing stretches. The motel has good sleeping facilities, single and double rooms with shower/toilet. Individual guests will be arrange their own breakfast and lunch pack and the dinner will be served at a small restaurant close to the motel. For group arrangements, the motel will provide breakfast, packed lunch and dinner. There are a lounge with television and wireless internet.
